Romans Bible Study Samples

November 30, 2006

Some weeks when I’m on top of things, I make handouts for my Bible study group. Here are some samples of those handouts. They might be helpful if you’re making up your own lessons and aren’t sure how to format them. Again, these are just samples. There is no right or wrong way to make a Bible study handbook. Be creative and see what you can come up with. It’s a really good idea to have the handouts. I find they help us stay on track and not lose focus. I try to include more questions than I think we’ll actually get to in a lesson. It’s better to have stuff left over in the end than to get to the end of a lesson, have time left to fill and not know how to fill it.

My life as a Bible study leader… takes 6 and 7 and 8

November 30, 2006

Well, I completely missed out on writing about the last three times our Bible study met, and we’re about to meet again tomorrow. Forgive me for being lazy about this. Here’s basically what I remember.

Our sixth meeting, we covered Romans 3: 1-20, where we basically discovered that we’re all in the same boat. God’s judgement is the same for us all – Jews and Gentiles. We’re all sinners who can’t save ourselves. (10-18) The law stands to condemn us. “Therefore, by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” (20) As you can tell, this was a really uplifting message… heh, the depravity of man. Just kidding. But at least we know where the passage is leading, and it is leading toward a word that we can obtain the gift of righteousness through faith in Jesus. So, it’s all good.

The next time we met, we read Romans3:21-31, which told us that God is just and He is righteous. He demonstrated his righteousness even at the time of the cross, when Jesus became our propitiation and satisfied God’s wrath intended for us. Though we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (23), we are able to receive justification through Christ Jesus. Can we hear an “amen”? We cannot boast in our works or in anything of ourselves. We can only boast of Jesus.

Our eighth time together, we read Chapter four and then went back to the Old Testament to read about the life of Abraham. It’s amazing that his faith was credited to him as righteousness. It’s interesting too, because it appears that there were times when he doubted. Yet, Paul says Abraham did not waiver in his faith. So, what does that mean for us today? I think it means what Jesus said, that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.

So, have faith in the Lord, Bible study leaders. Trust that God is who he says he is. He will keep his promises. His grace is sufficient for you. He has already paid the price which has caused us to be righteous in God’s eyes – if only we have faith.

Praise God for working at Interlochen

November 7, 2006

Hello Dear Friends,

Praise the Lord as always! Success, success!! The first half of the SAGBA meeting was planning and board-meeting type discussion. After sitting through that (nervously fidgeting in my chuck taylors), they had a time of “coming out stories.” I gave my life’s testimony–the times I’ve come within an inch of dying, all the trials God has brought my mom and I through, the struggles with my dad, the miracles God worked in so many marvelous ways to keep me in music, and the wonderful and complete healing and peace that is in Christ for a lost soul like mine. I was nervous, shaky, and cold–wasn’t easy. I don’t really feel like I was anything impressive or said anything momentous. I know I could have done better in getting points across. But, praise the Lord, that’s the way it’s supposed to be, right? My weakness for His glory. I know that the Holy Spirit was there working on hearts–I could see it in their faces and tell by the questions they asked. One of them
turned out to be an atheist, “I don’t believe in God; I am my own god who calls all the shots, and I’m just fine.” Oddly enough (Lord works in mysterious ways), that was the person I ended up walking with all the way across campus back to her dorm. Of course, she was not “just fine.” Pray for her, Erin, one confused and misled by early church experience. I just let her talk (so that I could quietly pray like crazy), and she gradually got more friendly. By the end of our conversation, the Spirit had softened her enough to accept an invitation to both Bible study and church! Praise the Lord! I know there were a lot of long-term seeds planted tonight in various hearts, but at least I know that one seed is beginning to sprout.

Thank-you so very much for your continuing prayer. Before I set out tonight, I could really feel all of your encouragement and strength as I prayed and sang in one of the practice rooms. Please pray for the Bible study this Wednesday night (6:30 in the Language Arts rotunda if anybody is in the neighborhood) and the Improv worship service next Sunday. Sarah and I had a wonderful and very encouraging time of prayer, supplication, inspirations, and dedications tonight after the meeting–pray for our continued spiritual growth together in this mission front. We will most certainly be praying for all of you in the missions and works God has called you to do. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord! How wonderful to serve the God of the universe with a Bible in one hand and a viola in the other! Thank-you again for your prayers and encouragement, my dear brethren. The peace of our Lord be with you!

In Christ still fired up,
Morgan O’Shaughnessey,viola MasterWorks student ‘05 ‘06
